Origin
The origins of the pedigree lie in the mid 60’s in America. The originator of the pedigree is Ann Baker. She called the pedigree Ragdoll. The Ragdoll was given this name because the are very relaxed and limp when they are lifted.
Appearance
The Ragdoll is a semi-longhaired cat with blue eyes. The Ragdoll is a big, muscular and big-boned. Ragdolls are born white. Around the third year of their life, they are fully grown and completely coloured. A matured female weighs between four and six kilo’s. A matured male will weight between five and eight kilo’s.
Colours seal/blue and lilac/choc
The Ragdoll is part of the pointed cats group (colour points), this means that the points (ears, mask, paws and tail) are coloured, while the body colour is lighter. Most common colours are seal and blue. The colours lilac and chocolate are less common. Lilac is a thinning of chocolate. In Ragdoll pedigrees one does see these colours on a regular basis, but often it appears at the age of two to three years that these cats are light blue or light seal. I find that the inbreeding with Balinese cats and persians is not a good choise. The character and appearance is not what the Ragdoll was in the past. I use only old lines, with no inbreeding of other cats that weren't into the ragdolls from the beginning.Their is lilac & choc & red from the beginning in the Ragdolls but to find it is more difficult. Besides the colour, the variety determinates the look. The Ragdoll appears in three varieties, colour point, mitted and bicolour.
Colorpoint
The points (ear, mask, paw and tail) are coloured. The body colour is lighter, cream-coloured by seal and ice-blue by blue.
Mitted
The points are coloured, the for paws have white socks (mittens) and the rear paws have white boots. Chin and chest are white. From the chin towards the tail there is a white line across the belly. Some mitteds have a white blaze on their face. The body colour is cream.
Bicolour
The mask is coloured and has an inverted white “V” on it. Ears and tail are coloured. Chin, chest, belly and paws are white. The back colour is cream.
Tabby
Also called lynx. The tabby markings in the points appears in all colours and varieties.Tabby is from the beginning and from another breed.I like the Tabby in the beginning the most
Torby
A cat that is both tortie and tabby. Red is also in the beginning into the Ragdoll, but also from another breed the Persians.
Character
The Ragdoll is a calm, gentle and affectionate cat. Ragdolls are better not left alone outside, because they will follow each and everyone. They are curious and love to play, and usually friends with everybody. Ragdolls nearly always want to be with you. I only breed with original ragdolls without persians and Balinese cats in their pedigrees.
Grooming
The coat is silk-soft, and normally does not tangle. Brushing/combing once a week is normally sufficient. When the coat changes it is better to do this more frequently to remove the loose hairs, this in order to prevent hairballs. It is not necessary to bath the cat (only when this is really required), it is better to powder the cat with a soft baby-powder and brush this out after a while, this way you will remove all the dirt and grease out of the coat.
